Every guide about buying a used boat stops at the handshake. The part that actually goes wrong happens twenty minutes later, when a boat that has not moved in three years is hitched to a vehicle that has never towed one, and there are forty miles of interstate between the seller's street and your driveway.

None of this is difficult. It is just a different job from the one you spent the morning doing. The trailer inspection tells you whether the trailer is any good. This tells you whether you can leave with it today.

What has to be true before you agree to tow it

Two numbers decide it, and both exist in writing before you arrive.

The first is on the trailer. Federal rules put a certification label on the forward half of a trailer's left side carrying, among other things, its Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and a Gross Axle Weight Rating for each axle (49 CFR 567.4). The GVWR is the ceiling for the trailer and everything on it: hull, engine, batteries, fuel, and the two anchors and four life jackets the seller threw in.

The second is in your own vehicle's manual, and on many vehicles on a placard in the driver's door opening. It is the tow rating, and it is not one number for the model. It moves with the engine, the axle ratio, the cab and the trim, and the figure printed in a magazine review of a truck like yours is not the figure for yours.

Compare them the pessimistic way. Assume the boat is heavier than the listing said, because a dry hull weight quoted from a brochure ignores the engine, the fuel and fifteen years of accumulated tackle. If the two numbers are close, the answer is to arrange a tow rather than to hope.

Does the coupler fit the ball on your truck?

This is the single most common reason somebody buys a boat and cannot take it home. The coupler on the trailer tongue is sized, and so is the ball on your hitch, and they are usually one of 1‑7/8, 2 or 2‑5/16 inches. Both sizes are stamped where you can read them: on the top of the coupler, and on the flat of the ball.

A 2 inch coupler will sit down over a 1‑7/8 inch ball and feel latched. It is not latched. It will come off at the first serious bump, which is the scenario safety chains exist for, and you do not want to be finding out whether the chains were any good.

Check it before you hand over money, not after. Ask the seller for a photo of the coupler stamp while you are still messaging, along with the trailer's plug type, and you will know whether to bring an adapter or a different ball mount.

Height matters too, in the boring way. The trailer should sit level or very slightly nose down when hitched. Nose high pushes weight off the tongue and is one of the ways a rig starts to sway.

Where do the safety chains go, and does anyone check?

Skipping them is a ticket, not a style choice. Florida, to take one state's wording, requires safety chains, cables or other devices meeting the federal standard at 49 CFR 393.71, strong enough to keep the trailer attached to the towing vehicle under all conditions, and makes a violation a moving infraction (Florida Statutes 316.530). Most states have something equivalent. The details differ, so check the one you are driving through, but nowhere treats it as a matter of taste.

Cross them under the tongue in an X and attach them to the vehicle rather than to the ball mount bolt. Crossed, they cradle the tongue if the coupler lets go instead of letting it dig into the road. Leave enough slack for a full-lock turn and no more than that: chains long enough to drag will be worn through and useless by the time you need them.

If the trailer has brakes it probably also has a breakaway cable, which is the thin steel lanyard with a pin on the end. It goes to the vehicle, not to the ball mount and not to a chain. Clipped to a chain, it separates when the chain does and applies nothing.

Why the trailer's plug is the part that usually fails

Trailer lighting requirements are federal, and they cover more than the two lamps at the back: stop lamps, taillamps, turn signals, a license plate lamp, side marker lamps and reflex reflectors (FMVSS 108, 49 CFR 571.108). What decides whether you get any of it is the connector, and connectors are where a boat trailer and a modern tow vehicle disagree.

A basic trailer with no brakes usually ends in a flat four-pin plug carrying ground, running lights and the two turn and brake circuits. Anything with electric brakes or a battery charge line needs more conductors and ends in a round seven-pin. Trucks built to tow generally have the seven-pin socket and sometimes a four-pin alongside it; older vehicles and crossovers often have the four alone.

A seven-to-four adapter is a few dollars and lives in the truck permanently. Buying one on the way is a forty mile detour. Test the lights with the adapter fitted and the engine running, with somebody standing behind the trailer while you work the pedal and the indicators, and remember that on a trailer a dead circuit is nearly always the ground rather than the bulb.

The winch strap is not holding the boat on

The winch strap pulls the boat up the bunks and holds the bow against the roller. It is not a tie-down and it is not rated as one, and a hard stop will let the hull slide forward past it.

Three things hold a boat on a trailer for the road:

  • A bow safety chain or strap from the trailer's winch post to the bow eye, separate from the winch strap itself. This is the one people skip.
  • Transom straps over the stern, one each side, pulling the hull down onto the bunks. Sun-rotted webbing is exactly as strong as it looks, so bring your own transom straps rather than using whatever is in the seller's truck bed.
  • A motor support if the outboard is heavy and the drive is long. A transom saver or a fitted motor toter takes the bouncing load off the transom and the tilt mechanism.

Look at how the hull sits once the straps are down. Sitting lower on one side can be a bunk out of adjustment, and it can be a hull holding water. What listing on a boat actually means works through which of the two you are looking at, and it is an easier question to answer in the seller's driveway than in yours.

Then empty the boat. Coolers, batteries, anchors, cushions and toolboxes all become projectiles on the freeway, and a cover that is not properly fastened will beat itself and the gelcoat apart in half an hour. And put the drain plug somewhere you will find it, because it is the smallest thing on the boat and the day you launch without it is memorable for the wrong reason.

How the load sits, and why a rig starts to sway

Sway is a weight distribution problem before it is a driving problem. Too little weight on the tongue and the trailer starts hunting behind you at speed; too much and it lifts the front of the tow vehicle, which takes weight off the wheels doing the steering.

The common rule of thumb puts tongue weight somewhere around a tenth to a seventh of the loaded trailer weight, and it is worth treating as exactly that: a rule of thumb. The figures that count are the ones your hitch and your trailer manufacturer publish, and on a boat you can move the answer around by where the fuel and the gear sit relative to the axle.

If the rig does start to sway, the instinct is the wrong one. Do not brake hard and do not steer against it. Come off the throttle, keep the wheel straight, and if the trailer has its own brakes, apply them by hand with the controller to pull the rig straight from the back.

How fast are you actually allowed to go?

Slower than the sign, in two separate ways.

Some states set a lower limit for anything towing. California caps a vehicle drawing another vehicle at 55 miles per hour whatever the posted limit says (Vehicle Code 22406), and other states have their own versions and their own truck lane rules. It is worth ten minutes on the state DOT site for anywhere you are driving through, because this is the sort of thing that produces a ticket on a trip you were never going to make again.

The other limit is written on the tires. Trailer tires carry a speed rating like any other tire, and on the ST-marked tires most boat trailers wear it is often well under the posted interstate limit. That, plus the age check on the sidewall date code, is the reason the tire row in the inspection guide matters more than tread depth ever does.

Stopping distance goes up with everything you have added behind you, and on a trailer with no brakes it goes up a great deal. Leave more room than feels necessary and take the first few miles slowly enough to hear what the rig is doing.

The stop twenty minutes out

Pull over somewhere flat within the first twenty or thirty minutes. Everything that is going to loosen loosens in that window, and everything that is going to run hot is warm by then and not yet destroyed.

Put a hand on each hub. Warm is normal. One hub noticeably hotter than the others is a bearing on its way out, and that is a call for a flatbed rather than another forty miles. Then walk the rig: coupler still latched and pinned, chains still crossed and not dragging, straps still tight because webbing always settles, lights still answering, and nothing in the boat that has worked its way loose.

The last row is the one that catches people who did everything else properly. What to put in the truck before you leave home

Assembled once, it lives behind the seat and covers almost every roadside version of this:

  • A trailer wiring adapter and a spare set of clip-on magnetic lights for the trailer that turns out to have none.
  • A pressure gauge, because trailer tires want far more pressure than a car and are almost always low.
  • A lug wrench that actually fits trailer wheels, plus a jack that will lift a loaded trailer. The one under your back seat is for your car.
  • A bearing kit and grease if the drive is long, since a bearing is the failure most likely to strand you.
  • Transom straps and a bow safety strap, both yours and both in daylight condition.

Prices on all of that move around, so check the current one rather than trusting a number in an article.

What if you cannot tow it at all?

Sometimes the honest answer at the seller's curb is that this is not leaving today. The coupler does not match, the tires are ten years old, the trailer has no title, or the weights simply do not work with the vehicle you drove there in.

That is a normal outcome and it is worth planning for rather than improvising around. A local hauler moving a boat a short distance is cheaper than a blowout, and far cheaper than a trailer that comes off the ball. Ask the seller to hold it for a few days, in writing, and come back with the right rig. A deposit and a few days of waiting cost less than any of the alternatives on this page.
